At least 28 die in Chile prison riot fire

IQUIQUE, Chile (CNN) -- At least 28 prisoners were killed Monday in a fire that broke out during a riot at a prison here following an apparent jailbreak, police said.

Up to another 150 inmates were injured at the Centro de Cumplimiento Peniteciario de Iquiques.

The blaze began when prisoners set mattresses and blankets on fire. The same source said the situation was under control.

Iquique is located about 600 miles (1,000 km) north of Santiago.
