Bomb blasts kill at least 4 in Colombia
BOGOTA, Colombia (CNN) -- Two bombs exploded Friday morning near Bogota's National University, killing at least four people and injuring several others, officials said. One of the dead was a policeman who was on a motorcycle when one of the bombs blew up, authorities said. Among the injured were two Colombian journalists. Interior Minister Armando Estrada told Reuters he suspected a government crackdown on paramilitaries could have provoked the attack. The first bomb exploded at 8 15 a.m. (9:15 a.m. EDT), the second about 10 minutes later. A third bomb was discovered at 9:15 a.m., but did not detonate, authorities said. All of the blasts occurred within a mile of each other in the western part of the city.
"I was in the shower when the bomb blew up and I saw this great flash through the window. Then I ran out and checked my family was okay and like five minutes later the second explosion went off," nearby resident Nestor Preciado told Reuters. A fourth bomb was discovered Tuesday in the center of the city and was deactivated. Friday's attacks followed a bombing last week in Medellin that killed seven people. Organizers of the Colombian-American Cup, a soccer event scheduled to be held in Medellin in July, said they would consider moving the matches to another location. |
