Ex-spy chief moved to prison he helped design
LIMA, Peru (CNN) -- Former spy chief Vladimiro Montesinos was transferred Thursday from a maximum security prison to an anti-terrorist prison he helped design, Peruvian officials said. In an effort to stay out of the facility at Lima's port of Callao, Montesinos has been offering to provide information on corruption in the government of former President Alberto Fujimori. The transfer was made before dawn. The Callao facility was set up to house suspected guerrillas captured by the Peruvian government. After eight months on the run, Montesinos was arrested Saturday night in Caracas, Venezuela, when two of his bodyguards turned him in. Peruvian authorities hope the country's former intelligence chief can help them track down public funds they said he embezzled. Montesinos, brought back to Lima aboard a Peruvian government plane Monday night, spent nearly a decade as the right-hand man to Fujimori, now in self-exile in Japan. |
