Southern Peru shaken by aftershock quake

LIMA, Peru (CNN) -- A preliminary magnitude 7.2 earthquake aftershock struck coastal Peru Saturday morning, shaking some of the same southern cities as the devastating quake last month, officials said.

The U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado, measured the quake at 7.2, though Peru's National Geophysical Institute measured it at 5.5.

The temblor was centered about 70 miles (110 km) off the coast, southwest of Arequipa, Peru's second-largest city, the geological survey said. It struck at 4:38 a.m. (5:38 a.m. EDT).

Peru's Civil Defense Institute had no immediate reports of casualties.

The aftershock was felt in the southern cities of Arequipa, Moquegua, Tacna, Cuzco, and Puno, and the rural villages surrounding them.

The quake was the strongest aftershock yet from the earthquake that struck southern Peruon June 25. That quake, with a magnitude of 8.1, killed at least 78 people, injured more than 1,000, and left another 12,500 without homes, according to the American Red Cross.

Thousands of aftershocks have resulted from the quake, according to the president of the Civil Defense Institute.

The port authority said the ocean Saturday appeared to be calm, and it issued no warnings for tsunamis.
