U.S. bomb damages mosque

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A bomb dropped Friday as two U.S. Air Force aircraft targeted an al Qaeda facility damaged a mosque in Khowst, Afghanistan, U.S. Central Command officials said.

Officials said the errant damage came from one of three laser-guided GBU-12 500-pound bombs that were dropped at approximately 10 a.m. ET Friday.

Two of the bombs struck a known al Qaeda facility, CNN was told. However, the third bomb experienced a guidance malfunction and missed the facility.

The resulting explosion damaged a mosque.

The Central Command said the extent of the damage was not known. The officials said they are unaware of any injuries as a result of the errant bomb.

Friday marks the beginning of Muslim holy month of Ramadan when the faithful, from dawn to dusk, refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and having sex.
