Women protest for jobs
KABUL, Afghanistan (CNN) -- Women want jobs under a post-Taliban Afghan government, said a group of women gathered Tuesday outside an unused United Nations office in Kabul. Some of the group of 25 women showed their faces after years of hiding them under Taliban-required burqas. The women spoke freely about the hardships they said they endured under the Taliban's strict Islamic rule. Among the rules: A woman cannot work, no matter what her situation. "I'm a widow," said a woman who said her name was Aora. "We have a son and we haven't a house. I have rented a place, but I need to make money." Some of the women brought their children to the demonstration to underscore their need for financial security. At least one man through his support behind the women. "We hope that under this government, all women can have a job and that women and girls can start studying again," said Asa Dolla. The Taliban did not allow girls to go to school. The women at the protest were pleased that the Taliban had been vanquished from Kabul and other areas, but said they were wary of whether a new government would offer any more security. |
