Injured U.S. troops moved to Germany
LANDSTUHL, Germany (CNN) -- Thirteen U.S. soldiers wounded in a friendly fire incident in Afghanistan have arrived at a medical centre in Germany for treatment. They arrived on Friday at Ramstein Air Base and were transported by bus and ambulance to the nearby Landstuhl Regional Medical Centre. Two are being treated in the intensive care unit at the centre, which is the largest U.S. military medical facility outside the United States. Dr. Steve Older, acting chief of the medical staff, said eight of the injured were able to walk off the bus into the hospital, while five had to be carried into the hospital by stretchers. Older said the patients were in better condition than the doctors had anticipated.
"The vast majority have lacerations, contusions, shrapnel wounds, some minor burns, some broken bones, and ruptured eardrums," he said. "We have couple of patients with more serious injuries to interior organs, vascular structures." Another soldier injured in the friendly fire incident had arrived at Ramstein on Thursday. He remains in intensive care, said Older, who added that the soldier's condition had improved. The troops were injured Wednesday when a 2,000-pound bomb dropped by a U.S. B-52 landed off-target near their position as they were fighting Taliban forces. The incident is under investigation by the U.S. military. Three U.S. Green Berets and six Afghan opposition fighters were killed in the blast near Kandahar. Eighteen Afghan fighters were wounded and were treated on U.S. ships in the Arabian Sea. The bodies of two of the U.S. soldiers were transported to the air base on Thursday. An honor guard stood at attention and saluted as the three flag-draped coffins were removed from a U.S. Air Force C-141 transport plane, placed into waiting vehicles and taken to a mortuary. |
