Two quakes shake Japan

TOKYO, Japan -- Two undersea earthquakes jolted Japan Sunday, but there were no reports of damage, injuries or tsunamis - the huge waves that can be caused by submarine quakes

The first quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8, struck at 6:54 a.m. local time below the seabed off the coast of Fukushima province, 240km (149 miles) northeast of Tokyo.

That tremor was followed by a second registering a magnitude of 4.3 some seven hours later about 19km (12 miles) below the Pacific seabed southwest of Tokyo.

The second quake shook buildings in Tokyo and nearby cities but caused no damage.

A magnitude 5 quake can cause damage to homes if it occurs in a residential area, and a magnitude 6 tremor can result in severe damage.

Japan sits atop four tectonic plates -- slabs of land that move across the earth's surface -- making it one of the world's most earthquake-prone nations.
