Kashmir suicide attack kills nine police

SRINAGAR, India (CNN) -- Members of a Kashmiri militant group stormed a police camp early Monday in what police called a suicide attack that killed nine policemen and wounded 10 others.

According to police, the militant group Lashkar-E-Toiba hit the police camp with grenades and arms fire, with one member of the group making it into the heart of the camp.

"At least nine policemen were killed when militants stormed a police camp near Handwara late on Sunday," a police official told Reuters news agency.

"The body of a militant was also found," the offical said.

The Handwara area lies in the Kupwara district, 87 km (54 miles) northwest of Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir.

Of the 10 wounded, six were in critical condition and were taken to a Srinagar hospital.

The last suicide attack in Kashmir was September 6, when a militant exploded a truck, hitting a police encampment.

That incident killed three people, including a police officer, civilian and the bomber.

Kashmir is the only Muslim-majority state in predominantly-Hindu India and the scene of a bloody rebellion by rebels who New Delhi says are backed by Pakistan.

Some 30,000 people are estimated to have been killed in violence during the 11-year insurgency.

Separatists put the toll closer to 80,000.

Reuters contributed to this report.
