Police said some of those taken were international citizens, but they would not say what countries they were from.

The Reuters news service quoted a Philippine military spokesman as saying the kidnappers were from the southern part of the country. The spokesman said about 20 gunman carried out Sunday's raid on Dos Palmas resort near the Palawan capital of Puerto Princesa, located about 600 kilometers (375 miles) southwest of Manila.

On Tuesday, gunmen attacked a tourist resort on the southern island of Samal, killing two people and snatching two Filipino hostages, who were later released.
