JAKARTA, Indonesia -- An explosion has rocked a residential area in the East Java capital of Surabaya, killing one and injuring another, Indonesian police said.

The explosion, believed to be from a bomb, hit around 6:00 a.m. (2300 GMT) near the front entrance of a house.

"Looking at the damage and the smell from the blast we suspect it was a bomb. We are still investigating the cause," Ito Sumardi, head of the Surabaya city police, told Reuters.

There have been several unsolved bomb attacks in Indonesia in recent months amid political tension that climaxed in the ousting of the country's first democratically-elected leader, Abdurrahman Wahid, by the top legislature late last month.

In the most serious of recent explosions, blasts rocked two Jakarta churches last month wounding more than 25 people on the eve of a showdown between the top assembly and Wahid.

One woman's legs were blown off and at least 24 other people were wounded at one of the churches. Witnesses said several people were hurt in the other explosion.

"These (attacks) were done by people who want to cause chaos and create insecurity in Jakarta during the special session," police spokesman Anton Bahrul Alam told Reuters, referring to Wahid's impeachment hearing by the top assembly.

Reuters contributed to this report.
