| Spanish crash 'kills 11'
LORCA, Spain (CNN) -- At least 11 people are believed to have been killed after a van carrying immigrant farm workers was in collision with a train on a level crossing. The railway runs parallel with the road near Lorca in the southeastern part of Spain. Some of the 25 people on board the train, which was heading towards Murcia, were injured when the accident happened at 8 a.m. (0700 GMT) on Wednesday.
The Mayor of Lorca, Miguel Navarro, told Spanish National Radio: "We don't know exactly how many victims there are...There were 25 people in the train but they've only suffered bruises." The workers in the van, who the mayor said were all from Ecuador, were on their way to nearby farms where they were employed to pick winter fruit and vegetables. The van was crushed in the accident, and all but one of the 12 people inside the tangled vehicle died, the mayor added. The crossing, about a mile from Lorca, did not have barriers. It is not clear whether the train derailed. Reuters contributed to this report. RELATED SITES: See related sites about Europe | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
