CNN's Madrid bureau chief Al Goodman said no group had immediately claimed responsibility for Friday's blast but state media blamed Basque separatist group ETA.

Goodman said the man had been identified as an army cook.

Television pictures from the suburb of the northern city showed a white car blown apart by the blast and surrounded by debris in the middle of a street.

"It was a loud blast in the area of a barracks and army residences," a police spokesman said. Two passersby were slightly injured, he said.

If committed by ETA, which called off a ceasefire just over a year ago, it would be the group's first fatal attack this year.

In 2000, ETA claimed responsibility for 23 assassinations, its bloodiest year since 1992.

Reuters contributed to this report.
