Search for Belgrade gunman

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia -- A masked gunman has opened fire on the driver of Serbia's new state security chief.

The attack took place in Belgrade on Sunday as the driver waited for state security chief Goran Petrovic who was meeting Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic.

State television said the gunman opened the car door and fired, injuring the driver who was taken to hospital.

Petrovic was appointed to his new job on Thursday night, shortly after the Serbian parliament approved the reformist government led by Djindjic, who has pledged to clamp down on crime and corruption.

He replaced Rade Markovic -- the feared chief of state security who served under former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic.

Milosevic's foes often blamed secret police for mysterious kidnappings and murders that characterised the final years of his turbulent 13 years in power.

Reuters contributed to this report.
