Spanish politician shot dead

MADRID, Spain -- Gunmen have killed a deputy mayor of a town in the Basque region of Spain.

The victim -- identified by state radio as Socialist party member Froilan Elespe Inciarte -- was shot in a bar in the town of Lasarte, near the Basque city of San Sebastian, a police spokesman said.

State radio immediately blamed the attack on ETA, which has been linked to 28 previous killings since it ended a ceasefire in December 1999.

Tuesday's attack followed a car bombing on Saturday night in the Mediterranean coastal resort of Rosas that killed a police officer.
