Milosevic daughter charged
BELGRADE, Yugoslavia -- Criminal charges have been filed charges against the daughter of former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic, Serbian police said. And the U.N. war crimes tribunal has formally presented Yugoslav authorities on Thursday with a warrant for the arrest of Milosevic. Milosevic was arrested last week and is being detained in Belgrade on domestic charges of suspicion of corruption and abuse of power rather than with a view to extradition on war crime charges.
Milosevic's daughter, Marija Milosevic, allegedly fired shots from a pistol as her father was escorted out of his villa early on Sunday. Local media said at least some of the shots hit the car of a government negotiator who had persuaded Milosevic to surrender. No injuries were reported. Police have charged her with "endangering public safety and illegal possession of arms." Traces of gunpowder were found on both her hands after the shooting, police said. The Belgrade public prosecutor will decide whether to prosecute her on the charges, which were submitted by Interior Ministry police, the state news agency Tanjug said. The former president was arrested on Sunday after an armed standoff involving Milosevic's security guards. Hundreds of police were stationed outside Milosevic's home for 24 hours after a failed attempt to arrest him on Saturday. Government officials spent hours negotiating with Milosevic before the arrest -- persuading him to surrender peacefully. RELATED STORIES:
