Profile: Alan SmithLONDON, England (CNN) -- Leeds United footballer Alan Smith's rise to the top of UK football has been dramatic. The striker was born on October 25, 1980 As a 10-year-old he was spotted for Leeds' centre of excellence and progressed through the junior ranks to sign professional terms in March 1998, having played for England at under-16 and under-18 levels. Made his senior debut as a substitute against Liverpool at Anfield in November 1998, scoring with his first touch in a 3-1 win. Under David O'Leary Smith has established himself as a first choice striker, scoring 31 times in 79 appearances.
