Five die in Spanish bus crash

MADRID, Spain -- Five people were killed when a bus travelling from Madrid to the southern coastal city of Malaga veered off the road.

At least 18 others were injured in the early morning crash.

Those killed included a Spanish man and woman, a Moroccan father and son and a 24-year-old woman from the United States, a spokesman for the local government told the Reuters news agency.

Officials identified the American victim as Dayna Gray, from California, correcting a spokesman who said earlier a man from the United States was killed.

Among the 30 to 40 passengers were Spanish, Moroccan, British and Dutch nationals. Most of them were said to have been asleep when the accident happened in the central Ciudad Real province.

Of the 18 injured, six remained in hospital but were not seriously injured, the spokesman said.

State radio reported that heavy overnight rain had contributed to the accident.
