Basque blast injures journalist

Aftermath of Friday's bomb in Madrid

MADRID, Spain (CNN) -- A man has been injured after a parcel bomb exploded at his home in the Basque town of Zarautz, Spanish police said.

The victim, identified as journalist Gorka Landaburu, had burns to his hands and face but police said his injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility but CNN’s Al Goodman said the bomb, which police said may have been hidden in a book, bore the hallmarks of the Basque separatist group ETA, which has previously targeted journalists with death threats.

Last year a reporter was shot dead and many others are now forced to have bodyguards.

Landaburu worked for a Madrid-based national news weekly magazine, Cambio 16 and a television station, Canal Sur TV.

The explosion at about 10.20 local time came after Sunday’s election in the Basque region in which Euskal Herritarrok (EH) -- widely seen as ETA's political arm -- suffered a setback.

EH lost half its 14 seats and saw its percentage of the popular vote plunge to about 10 percent, the lowest since Spain's return to democracy in the late 1970s.

The spectre of violence overshadowed the election, with the shooting of a conservative Popular Party senator a week before and a car bombing in Madrid wounding 14 people on Friday.

Both attacks were blamed on ETA -- Basque Homeland and Freedom in the Basque language -- which has claimed over 800 lives in its 33-year campaign for an in independent state straddling the French-Spanish border.
