Dozens affected by chemical cloud

FRANKFURT, Germany -- More than 100 people needed medical treatment after inhaling gases released during a fire at a chemicals plant.

A spokeswoman for plant operator BASF AG said an explosion of powder used in the textile industry had caused the fire at the huge plant in the western German town of Ludwigshafen.

The fire, confined to one part of the plant, released clouds of smoke carrying gases, including nitric oxide which can irritate people's eyes, skin and respiratory tracts.

The spokeswoman said between 50 and 60 workers complained of breathing difficulties and received treatment from the plant's medical services.

A similar number of local residents were taken to nearby clinics and hospitals for treatment.

A police spokeswoman said residents were warned to keep their windows and doors closed while traffic was diverted away from the area.
