Czech police seize large Ecstasy haul

PRAGUE, Czech Republic -- Czech police have seized their largest ever cache of Ecstasy, customs officials say.

Eight arrests followed the discovery of 100,000 Ecstasy pills at Prague's international airport on Wednesday, it was announced on Saturday.

Customs spokeswoman Ivana Bednarova said an Israeli and seven Czechs have been detained.

The pills, which came from the Netherlands, were believed to be on their way to Canada.

The street value of the drugs in Canada is estimated at 100 million Czech crowns ($2.5 million).

"It was the biggest seizure involving Ecstasy in the history of the Czech Republic," Bednarova said.

Ecstasy, an amphetamine-based drug, is widely-associated with the late-night dance scene.

The eight suspects face up to 15 years in prison if convicted of illegal possession and distribution of narcotics.
