Bank chief mugged at cash machineLONDON, England -- A multi-millionaire bank chairman has been mugged while withdrawing money from a cash machine. Multi-millionaire Sir George Mathewson was robbed by two muggers who distracted him by saying he had dropped a £5 note. Mathewson, chairman of the Royal Bank of Scotland, was withdrawing cash from a central London automated teller machine when two con men approached him. As the Scottish financial tycoon went to pick up the note, which the thieves had dropped as bait, the robbers grabbed his bank card and took off. A spokeswoman for the Edinburgh-based bank said Mathewson was unhurt, but embarrassed. He did not lose any money as he reported the incident to the police immediately and cancelled the card. A statement from the bank added: "This highlights the fact that people must always be vigilant when using cash machines. It can happen to anyone." |
