Swedish riot leader jailed

STOCKHOLM, Sweden -- A Swede who led rioting during a European Union summit has been jailed for four years.

Jonathan Pye, 25, was found guilty of taking part in street fighting that broke out during the June 14-16 EU meetings in Gothenburg, the city's district court ruled.

Prosecutor Carl Bergstroem said the sentence was too light "considering he was the first suspects found guilty of violent rioting, plus instigation to rioting," The Associated Press news agency reported.

Pye was the last of suspects arrested so far to be facing formal charges, but prosecutor Lena Medelius did not rule out future indictments.

Twenty-two people, including 13 foreign nationals, have been sentenced to at least five months in prison in connection with the violence, in which more than 90 people were injured.

Seven people have been acquitted at trial. More than 550 people were detained, but most were quickly released.

During the court cases prosecutors have relied heavily on videotape that showed dozens of youths, often wearing hoods, rampaging through the streets.

The protesters hurled cobblestones, rocks and metal bars at police, and caused damage to property estimated at $4.1 million.

About 25,000 people were in Gothenburg to protest on a raft of issues but only a minority took part in the violence.
