Queen Mother has medical tests
BALMORAL, Scotland -- The Queen Mother has had further medical tests in hospital which prevented her attending her beloved Highland Games. The 101-year-old Royal, who last month was given a blood transfusion for anaemia, visited the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on Saturday afternoon and stayed for 45 minutes. "She went to church today which is an indication that she is all right," said a Buckingham Palace spokeswoman on Sunday. While the Queen Mother was at hospital, other senior members of the Royal family, including 19-year-old Prince William, were at the Braemar Highland Games. Just before her 101st birthday on August 4, the Queen Mother was admitted to the King Edward VII Hospital in central London for treatment. Initially, doctors thought she was suffering from heat exhaustion during a summer heatwave. But anaemia was diagnosed and she was given a blood transfusion. Undeterred, the Queen Mother appeared in public for her traditional birthday celebrations outside Clarence House, her London residence. Since then she has travelled to Scotland and is now staying at Birkhall, on the Queen's Balmoral estate, after a visit to the Castle of Mey, her other Highland home on Scotland's remote north coast. The Royals are continuing their summer break at Balmoral The Queen Mother looked frail and leaned heavily on walking sticks as she joined the Royal family at Crathie Church on Sunday. Wearing a light blue dress and matching hat and veil, she arrived about 10 minutes ahead of the rest of the family. She was followed by the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and the Earl and Countess of Wessex. Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife Cherie also attended the hour-long service which was taken by the Reverend John Miller. Hopes had been high on Saturday that the Queen Mother would be able to attend the annual Braemar Gathering after she joined other members of her family at their estate in Balmoral last month. But shortly before the royal party arrived at the games, Buckingham Palace said that the Queen Mother had decided against attending after being ordered to rest by doctors. |
