Bosnian mass grave exhumedTUZLA, Bosnia-Herzegovina -- A mass grave believed to hold hundreds of corpses is being exhumed by forensic experts, an official has said. The grave, near the site of the worst massacre since World War II at Srebrenica, is believed to contain the bodies of Muslims killed during the 1992 to 1995 Bosnian war.
Murat Hurtic, a member of the Muslim Commission for Missing Persons, said forensic experts had begun the work around the village of Cancari in eastern Bosnia on Tuesday. The dig comes a day after the commission had finished exhuming another mass grave in a nearby wooded area, collecting bags full of the remains of 250 people. The commission analyses the DNA of remains found at mass graves in an attempt to match their genetic information with people who are still missing relatives. About 200,000 people died during the war and up to 20,000 remain missing. An estimated 8,000 were killed in Srebrenica after Bosnian Serb forces overran the United Nations' enclave in July 1995. The Bosnian Serbs systematically executed men and boys while expelling the rest of the Muslim population. |
