SAS: History of past incidents
OSLO, Norway -- The crash of a Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) jet in Milan, in which more than 100 people died, is the worst in the airline's history and the first deaths involving an SAS crash since 1969. The following is a list of major accidents or hijackings involving SAS airliners compiled by Reuters news agency. November 3, 1994: A Bosnian man seeking more international aid hijacked an MD-80 plane with 129 people aboard on a domestic flight in Norway. He was seized after the plane landed in Oslo and no one was hurt. November 25, 1993: A fire in an aft cabin forced an MD-80 plane to make an emergency landing in Copenhagen. One of the 85 people aboard was seriously hurt. December 27, 1991: An MD-80 plane crashed in a field near Stockholm after ice on the wings was sucked into the motors. The crash was reported as the "Christmas Miracle" because all 129 people survived, with just one person suffering serious injuries.
February 23, 1987: A DC-9 plane with 107 people aboard was damaged in a hard landing at Trondheim airport in mid-Norway. February 28, 1984: A DC-10 plane with 177 people aboard overran the runway at New York. January 30, 1973: A DC-9 with 33 people aboard was forced to abort takeoff at the last moment. No one was seriously hurt. September 15, 1972: A DC-9 was hijacked between Malmo in Sweden and Madrid. None of the 92 people aboard was hurt. April 19, 1970: Twelve people were seriously injured when a DC-8 with 65 people aboard caught fire during takeoff from Rome airport. January 13, 1969: Fifteen people died and 17 were seriously injured when a DC-8 crashed in the sea off Los Angeles. January 19, 1960: All 42 people aboard a Caravelle plane died when the plane crashed into a mountain in Turkey near Ankara. |
