New Italian air crashes kill six

GROSETTO, Italy -- A helicopter ambulance transporting a patient to hospital has crashed in Italy killing all five people on board.

In a separate incident, another helicopter crashed killing the pilot.

Both accidents happened on Tuesday, a day after a crash at Milan's Linate Airport in which 118 people died.

A fire service official told Reuters news agency that the medical helicopter -- an Agusta Bell 109 -- was carrying a patient, a doctor, a nurse and two pilots when it crashed near the Tuscan town of Castiglione dell Pescaia.

A rescue worker told Italian television that the exact cause of the crash was not known but added that the accident happened in fog and mist.

In the second incident, the pilot of a helicopter died in northern Cuneo province when it crashed and burst into flames.

Meanwhile, Milan's Linate airport remained closed on Tuesday as the inquiry into the circumstances of Monday's tragedy continued.

Officials said the airport will not open before 6 p.m. (1600 GMT) on Tuesday.

Linate was closed after a Scandinavian Airlines System MD-87 taking off in heavy fog on Monday morning collided with a light plane.

The SAS plane then hit a baggage-handling hanger and burst into flames.

All on aboard both aircraft as well as four ground staff were killed.

Flights bound for Linate have been diverted to Milan's largest airport, Malpensa, and an airport at the nearby city of Bergamo.
