Terror suspect arrested in GermanyBERLIN, Germany -- A man has been arrested trying to board a plane to Iran with baggage containing a "holy war" manual and camouflage clothing. German federal prosecutors detained the man, named only as Harun A, a Turkish citizen, at Frankfurt International Airport on October 17, officials revealed in a statement on Tuesday.
The 29-year-old was arrested on suspicion of planning murder attacks and being a member of an Islamic terror organisation, the statement said. The statement from the Karlsruhe prosecutor's office said: "Border police found items in his luggage including a balaclava, camouflage clothing, a chemical weapons protection suit and materials to produce an explosive detonator. "The accused is suspected of planning serious acts of violence as member of a terrorist association with a fundamentalist Islamic background." Prosecutors, quoted by the Associated Press and Reuters, also said the man was carrying a CD-ROM in his baggage that contained a training programme for fighters wanting to wage "holy war." German Interior Minister Otto Schily warned on Monday that members of the Al Qaeda network associated with Saudi-born Osama bin Laden or similar groups might still be in Germany. Germany is a focal point of the investigation into the September 11 attacks on New York and Washington, with authorities liaising on both sides of the Atlantic. At least three of the suspected hijackers had studied recently in Hamburg, including one of those suspected of having flown one of the planes into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. |
