Corsican nationalist shot dead

AJACCIO, Corsica -- A member of a militant nationalist group on the French-ruled Mediterranean island of Corsica has been assassinated, police said.

A police spokesman told Reuters that Nicolas Gros, 32, was a member of banned separatist group Armata Corsa and an ally of its leader Francois Santoni, who was shot dead in August.

Gros was shot in his car as he left his home in the southern town of Bonifacio. The number of gunmen was not known, police added.

The latest murder in Corsica follows a spate of vendetta killings between separatist groups who have waged an armed struggle for independence from France for three decades.

Four days after Santoni's murder in August, two incinerated bodies were found by their burnt-out car in the north of the island. Police suspected they were victims of a feud among rival nationalist groups.

The violence has cast a shadow over moves by Prime Minister Lionel Jospin to grant Corsica limited automony. The killing of Santoni led to calls that Jospin suspend the draft legislation.
