Basque police officer fire bombed

BORDEAUX, France -- Three petrol bombs were thrown into the courtyard of a policeman's home in the Basque region of southwestern France, a police source said.

No one was hurt, but two cars were burned and the gate to the courtyard was damaged, the source added.

No one claimed responsibility for the attack in the early hours of Sunday on the house in Ascain, five kilometres from the Spanish border near the town of Bayonne.

The policeman worked for the police station in the nearby town of Saint-Jean-de-Luz.

The incident is the latest in a series of attacks since last summer.

No one has been identified as being behind the attacks, but anonymous letters have claimed responsibility for previous attacks in the name of the Basque independence movement.

Last week, police arrested three suspected members of ETA after a gunfight in France that raised fears the Basque separatist group is increasingly active on French soil.

ETA campaigns for independence for the ethnic Basques of northern Spain and southwest France, and has been linked to 800 deaths in Spain in the last 30 years.
