Blair, Powell mark September 11LONDON, England -- Standing shoulder to shoulder outside 10 Downing Street, Tony Blair and Colin Powell marked three months since the September 11 terror attacks. The UK prime minister and U.S. secretary of state stood at attention outside Blair's office as a group of musicians from the American School of London played "God Save the Queen" and "The Star Spangled Banner." UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw and U.S. Ambassador William Farish also attended the ceremony at 1346 GMT, three months to the minute after the first of two jets plowed into New York's World Trade Center.
Also attending were 35 Marshall scholars -- American students in London on an exchange visit. After the brief ceremony, Blair and Powell chatted with the musicians and the scholars, posing for pictures with them before returning inside No. 10 for talks on the next phase of war in Afghanistan. A total of 86 countries, including the United States, were marking the three-month anniversary of the terror attacks following a request from U.S. President George W. Bush. At the White House in Washington, Bush took part in what a spokesman called "a small service of remembrance." A service also took place at the site of the collapsed towers, where two hijacked passenger jets were crashed. Commemorations also took place at the other September 11 crash sites -- the Pentagon in Washington and in Pennsylvania. The crew involved in the current U.S. space shuttle mission also took part in a ceremony. American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts on the international space station joined together and shared their thoughts of the attacks. The astronauts on the shuttle Endeavour carried more than 6,000 American flags into space for the ceremony. The flags will be presented to victims' families when the shuttle returns to earth. |
