A history of the UK's summer riots

LONDON, England -- More than a 100 people were injured, and millions of pounds worth of damage was caused during rioting in Bradford, Burnley and Oldham last summer.

Here is a chronology of the events:

* Problems first started on Easter Sunday in April, when several pubs were attacked, 50 cars damaged and 19 people assaulted.

* The most serious outbreak during the summer came in late May in Oldham. * It was claimed Asian youths were creating a "no go" area for whites. Tempers rose further with an attack on war veteran Walter Chamberlain, 76.

* The National Front ignored a Home Office ban on political marches. The situation finally reached boiling point on May 26 after an argument between two teenagers -- one Asian and one white -- outside a fish and chip shop.

* During three nights of pitched battles between Asian and white gangs and police, rioters overturned cars and hurled firebombs and bricks, while at one stage a 500-strong Asian mob went on the rampage for seven hours.

* Within a week the troubles crossed back over the Pennines to Leeds, where more than 100 Asians rioted for six hours.

* Three weeks after that, tensions flared again in the Lancashire town of Burnley following a hammer attack on an Asian taxi driver by a gang of white men. Weeks earlier, the BNP had polled more than 11% at the General Election.

* Over two nights, there were clashes between mobs of more than 200 white and Asian youths who staged running battles.

* Police in Bradford said 46 people had been charged with rioting.

* A team of 60 detectives in the city is continuing to investigate more than 300 crimes, including assaults on police officers and arson, committed on the evening of July 7.

* More than 350 officers were injured and £10 million worth of property destroyed during the rioting in the Whetley Hill and Manningham areas of Bradford.
