Milosevic daughter goes on trial
BELGRADE, Yugoslavia -- The daughter of ex-Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic has gone on trial over allegations that she fired shots as her father was arrested in Belgrade in April. Marija Milosevic, who was born in 1964, is accused of endangering public safety as the ex-president was taken to prison. Beta news agency said she was in Belgrade municipal court as the trial began, Beta said. It is not known how long the trial will last, nor what sentence she will face if found guilty.
Witnesses said Milosevic fired five pistol shots as her father was escorted from his villa after a 36-hour standoff involving his security guards. Local media said bullets hit the car of a government negotiator who had persuaded Milosevic to surrender on charges of corruption and abuse of office. No injuries were reported. Marija ran a Belgrade-based television station when her father ruled the country. He is now being held at the U.N. war crimes court in The Hague, Netherlands, facing trial for atrocities committed during the Balkan wars of the 1990s. |
