Madonna's famous bra snapped up
LONDON, England -- One of Madonna's eye-popping conical bras has sold for £14,100 ($21,150) at a pop memorabilia auction. The piece of underwear was snapped up by a Chilean fashion museum at the sale on Thursday.
The Museum of Fashion and Textiles in Santiago, Chile, emerged the winner of unexpectedly high bidding for the black and fuchsia Jean-Paul Gaultier bra. A Christie's spokeswoman said the bra had been expected to fetch only £3,000 ($4,500). The seller, who was not identified, had won the bra in a British radio contest, the spokeswoman said. The memorable fashion statement was a fixture of the pop diva's 1990 Blond Ambition Tour. Also on sale was a page of handwritten lyrics by Beatles legend Paul McCartney. The lyrics were bought by an unidentified private collector for £19,975 ($29,960), Christie's said. The auction featured more than 200 pieces of pop memorabilia, including an autographed letter sent by John Lennon to an Indian fan and a stage suit worn by Eric Clapton. The sale came as Madonna fans fought to buy tickets for her UK tour date. The show was sold out almost immediately, prompting organisers to add five extra shows. Hundreds of devoted fans had camped outside Earl's Court indoor arena in west London, which holds about 18,000 people, to ensure their places in the queue. Promoters told Reuters that all 16,000 tickets for the first show sold out within 15 minutes. The dates are part of her first world tour since the Girlie Show in 1993. Promoters from SFX Entertainment told Reuters the Drowned World tour would be the most extravagant stage spectacle of the singer's 17-year career. The tour starts in Cologne, Germany on June 5 and ends in Los Angeles three months later on September 9. RELATED STORIES:
