Palestinian teen-ager killed in Gaza
JERUSALEM (CNN) -- A Palestinian teen-ager was killed in violence Friday in Gaza, hospital sources said. The sources said Husam Tafesh, 16, died after being shot in the chest by live ammunition. They said an undetermined number of wounded Palestinians were en route to the hospital, located in Gaza. Reuters reported that the Israeli army said Tafesh was one of a group of protesters throwing stones at soldiers near the Karni border crossing. The army said it had fired warning shots at the protesters, including the teen. The army said that when the demonstrators failed to stop throwing stones, the soldiers fired at their legs. Separate clashes on the West Bank on Friday left four Palestinians wounded, the Palestine Red Crescent Society said. The agency said three people were wounded with live ammunition in Ramallah, and one person was wounded by rubber-coated steel bullets in Hebron.
Israeli officials had no immediate comment. Israeli police said Palestinians fired shots at Gilo, a Jewish neighborhood on the outskirts of Jerusalem. Police said two bullets entered one of the settler's homes but there were no injuries. The Palestinians had no immediate comment about the report. CNN also reported an exchange of fire in the Palestinian town of Al-Khader, south of Bethlehem, but no details were available. Palestinian cabinet minister Saeb Erakat said there was also shelling in the West Bank town of Jericho, targeting Force 17, the elite armed guard of Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat. The Palestine Red Crescent Society said one person was moderately wounded in Jericho. It was unclear whether that person was a civilian or a member of Force 17. In response, the Israel Defense Forces said, "The IDF does not comment on this subject." RELATED STORIES:
