Fatah operative wounded in West BankJERUSALEM (CNN) -- A man identified as a Fatah operative on Israel's "most wanted" list was shot and wounded Wednesday in Hebron in the West Bank.
Palestinian hospital officials described the wounds suffered by Azzam Anatche, 22, as "light." Israel Radio quoted an Israel Defense Forces official as saying the IDF was not operating in the area and had no knowledge of the shooting. Fatah is the political wing of Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat's Palestine Liberation Organization. The incident followed a meeting Tuesday by Israel's "kitchen Cabinet" -- an informal meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and a few key ministers -- at which ministers agreed to continue to support a U.S.-brokered cease-fire but also voted to continue what they called "active self-defense," including killings of people Israel has accused of being "terrorists." The Israeli Security Cabinet is due to meet Wednesday to discuss the current state of the cease-fire. Earlier this week, the United States said the Palestinian Authority was not doing enough to curb Israeli-Palestinian violence in the Middle East. Washington also condemned the Israeli policy of targeted killings. |
