Israeli forces pull out of Ramallah
JERUSALEM (CNN) -- Israeli tanks and troops completed their withdrawal from areas of the West Bank town of Ramallah Wednesday morning, Israeli military sources told CNN. Israeli forces entered half a dozen West Bank Palestinian towns after last month's killing of Israeli Tourism Minister Rechavam Zeevi. Israeli troops and tanks remain in Jenin and Tulkarem. In another incident Wednesday, Palestinians launched three mortar shells at the Jewish settlement of Gush Katif in Gaza, according to an Israel Defense Forces spokesman. IDF soldiers returned fire at the source of the shelling. Palestinian sources said a Palestinian man was killed by Israeli fire in Khan Younis, Gaza.
In other developments, two members of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade were killed in a refugee camp near Jenin Tuesday when an explosion went off in a car, Palestinian sources said. The two men were identified as Akrama Istetah, 35, and Majdi Tayeb, 30, both members of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, an off-shoot of Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat's Fatah Faction. Both men were wanted by Israel. The Israel Defense Forces said it was checking the report. The explosion occurred hours after three Palestinians and one Israeli were killed in a clash south of Nablus near the village of Tel Bourin. The IDF said an Israeli patrol traveling in a jeep was attacked by Palestinian gunmen and there was an exchange of gunfire. Both the IDF and the Palestine Red Crescent Society said three Palestinians were killed. The Red Crescent claimed its ambulances were blocked by Israeli troops and were not allowed to go into the area where the shooting was took place to treat the Palestinians injured in the gunbattle. The Red Crescent also said soldiers were seen shooting Palestinians who were lying on the ground, and then said they were told not to treat them because they were dead. In addition, the Red Crescent said an Israeli soldier was brought out to be treated by one of its medical teams, but said he was already dead and nothing could be done for him. The IDF called the Red Crescent account of the incident a lie, saying the Palestinians were hit in an exchange of gunfire and that the Red Crescent was allowed to go into the area to treat the wounded. The IDF said the wounded soldier was treated by Israeli doctors on the ground and was then taken by helicopter to the hospital where he died. |
