The Israeli army said the action followed many incidents involving use of mortar bombs, anti-tank grenades and light weapons fire toward the settlement of Neve Dekalim in Gush Katif and IDF posts and bases in the region.

Throughout the past months, 23 mortar bombs have been fired toward settlements and posts in Gush Katif, and in many of the cases Palestinians opened fire and threw grenades, the IDF said.

Israeli troops also raided the village of Shawawreh near the West Bank town of Bethlehem and arrested eight Palestinians.

A Palestinian was lightly wounded during the raid. The army seized a mortar, ammunition and grenades during the raid. Troops withdrew several hours later.
