Suicide bomber wounds Israeli guardsJERUSALEM (CNN) -- Two Israeli border police were wounded Monday when a Palestinian suicide bomber blew himself up at the Erez Border Crossing checkpoint between Israel and Gaza, Israel Defense Forces told CNN. Islamic group Hamas later took responsibility for the attack, identifying the suicide bomber as Taysir Al-Ajrami, a resident of the Jebalya refugee camp in Gaza. The crossing is a transit point used by many Palestinians with jobs in Israel. The attack took place just hours before U.S. envoys, retired General Anthony Zinni and Ambassador William Burns, were due to arrive in the region to try to cajole the Mideast adversaries back to the negotiating table. Israel has said their success depends on the Palestinians, while Palestinian officials said it is clear Israel is not interested in peace. On Sunday, two bombs detonated on a West Bank road as a convoy carrying an Israeli army leader passed by, the IDF said. No one was hurt. The explosions occurred on a road south of Hebron, near the Jewish settlement of Beit Haggai. Israeli officials were looking into whether IDF Chief of Staff General Shaul Mofaz was the actual target of the bombs. |
