After students have read CNNfyi.com article, "Metronome said to help ADHD," ask the following questions:
1. What is ADHD? How many school-age children are thought to be affected by ADHD? Why do you think most of the children who have been diagnosed with ADHD are boys? What are some treatments for people with ADHD?
2. What is a metronome? How is the Interactive Metronome being used to treat ADHD? What are some improvements shown in students who used the Interactive Metronome? Why do some experts have reservations about using the Interactive Metronome to treat ADHD? Do you think this device should be used even though questions remain about its effectiveness? Why or why not?
3. Inform students that, according to the National Association for Attention Deficit Disorder, about one in every 20 people has ADHD. Divide your class into three groups. Assign one of the following topics to each group: characteristics of ADHD and how it is diagnosed; use of medications and behavior-change programs, including the Interactive Metronome; and the impact of ADHD and how it affects a child's self-esteem and his/her relationships with family, friends and teachers. After students share their findings, have each student prepare a brochure or poster to educate students and parents about the disorder.
Extension
Invite a psychiatrist or counselor to speak with the class and answer any questions they have about ADHD.
