After students read the CNNfyi.com article "North Korea comes in from the cold," ask the following questions:
1. What is the European Union? What is the significance of the European Union establishing diplomatic relations with North Korea? Why do you think North Korea has had strained relationships with Western countries? How are the governments of North and South Korea different?
2. What alliances were made during the Korean conflict? Why do you think the United States supported South Korea? Who is Kim Jong-il? What are some reasons that North Korea has begun opening up to the West? What are some things that North Korea is now allowing? Who is Kim Dae-jung? What is his "sunshine policy"?
3. How do you think President George W. Bush has influenced the relationship between the United States and North Korea? How is North Korea affected by its inclusion on the U.S. State Department's list of countries sponsoring terrorism? How do you think the EU's announcement will affect dialogue between North and South Korea?
4. Divide students into small groups. Assign one of the following topics to each group to research about North Korea: government, military, economy and international relations. Have each group present its information to the class. Ask students to include ways in which they believe these categories will be affected by the new diplomatic relationship with the EU.
5. Direct students to write essays from the perspective of North Korean leader Kim Jong-il answering the question, "What are the benefits and drawbacks of having diplomatic relations with the European Union?" Invite students to share their essays.
