CNN NEWSROOM also ran this story today. If you tape the show for classroom use, use it and the http://turnerlearning.com/newsroom/archive/0501/NR051701g.html Daily Guide for more questions and activities. Also use the opportunity for students to compare and contrast different media presentations.
Curriculum connections - Social studies: Central Asia
After students read the CNNfyi.com article "Years after independence, Kyrgyzstan struggles," ask the following questions:
1. Where are Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan? Of which former nation were they once a part? What has occurred in these regions since the collapse of the Soviet Union? Why are rebels raiding the areas? What fears do analysts have for the summer in these areas, as compared to what occurred in the previous summer?
2. What is being done to bring hope to Kyrgyzstan? In what ways can a radio station uplift citizens who are in crisis zones? Can you think of other instances in which people depended on radio for hope and information? Who is Alex Gaphurov, and why did people in Batken find him strange? What does Gaphurov believe the station offers to counter the guerilla groups that may try to enlist jobless men?
3. Why is the bazaar in Osh important to the people in Kyrgyzstan? What role did Osh play in history, and how does that role relate to its modern importance?
4. Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are countries that students are unlikely to know much about. Divide your class into thirds, and assign each group one of the three countries. Students in each group can choose to work in small groups, pairs or individually to learn more about their assigned country using textbooks and on or off-line resources. Allow students several days for research; then ask them to present what they have found about each country. Direct students to include an evaluation of the future of each country. How do students think their country will fare in the global economy, and what changes would have to be made in order for the country to thrive? Would students recommend travel in the country? Why or why not?
