After students read the CNNfyi.com article "Experts: Hurricane activity back to 'normal'," ask the following questions:
1. When is the normal hurricane season in the North American continent? What do forecasters predict for this year's season? What weather phenomena have influenced hurricanes in the last several years?
2. What are the levels of hurricane-like storms, and what are their characteristics? Although forecasters anticipate a quiet year, why do they still caution people to be prepared for major storms?
3. How do people prepare to be safe during tropical storms and hurricanes? If you live in an area prone to hurricanes, have students check with local offices that oversee safety precautions and community preparations. Otherwise, direct them to the suggested Websites and offline resources that discuss safety preparations. Students can make brochures that inform people about important safety procedures.
4. Students can make charts that can quickly educate readers about the characteristics of diffferent classes of tropical storms and hurricanes.
5. For more involved activities, go to the CNNfyi.com special, "Storm! Severe weather." It includes a lesson on hurricanes as well as other resources on weather.
6. Our educational partner Riverdeep has a Hurricane Lab where students can analyze data and make predictions. Go to the Teacher Studio for tips on giving assignments and using the experiments in the classroom.
