Materials

"
Maps or a globe
Internet access
Suggested Time
One-two class periods
Procedures
1. Have students locate North and South Korea on a map or globe, or use the interactive maps on the CNNfyi.com article. Ask students to also pay attention to the countries surrounding North and South Korea. As a check, they can use the interactive quiz on the story to match country names to the map.
2. After students read the CNNfyi.com story "
Seoul hails U.S. decision on N. Korea
," ask the following questions:
Who is Colin Powell? What did he announce will be topics of reopened discussion between North Korea and the United States? Who is Kim Dae-jung, and why does he welcome this news? What influenced the U.S. policy decision, according to a White House official?
What is the United States asking of North Korea? What will the U.S. do in return for North Korea's compliance? Do these accommodations by both nations seem reasonable to you? Explain. Why do you think that relations between North Korea and the United States are so important to Japan?
In a written statement, President Bush stated, "Our approach will offer North Korea the opportunity to demonstrate the seriousness of its desire for improved relations." In what ways do the American requests offer this opportunity?
3. Use the related elements on the story to inform students about the history of tense relations between the United States and North and South Korea. The hostility is one reason that President Kim Dae-jung's reconciliation efforts, called the "Sunshine Policy," helped him to achieve the 2000 Nobel Peace Prize. Allow students time to research the Sunshine Policy and the advances it has brought about between North and South Korea.
Assessment
Students can present information they leaned about the "Sunshine Policy" and make recommendations on ways in which North Korea and its ruler, Kim Jong Il, can show conciliatory gestures.
Accommodation
Using maps of Southeast Asia, students can indicate strategic positions of neighboring countries, explore and determine their positions of power and policies with countries in their proximity and analyze the importance of positive international relations.
Challenge
Students can research the history, importance and significance of the Nobel Peace Prize. Using the information they learned about Dae-jung's Sunshine Policy, they can evaluate the South Korean president's peace efforts and analyze why he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
