After students read the CNNfyi.com article "New front opens in Macedonia" ask the following questions:
1. Who is Boris Trajkovski? What event prompted the demonstration in Macedonia?
Why do you think the demonstrators demanded President Trajkovski's resignation? Do you agree or disagree with their actions? Discuss.
2. Why were the ethnic Albanian rebels allowed to take their weapons with them as they left the village? What action do the demonstrators want Trajkovski to take? Why did Trajkovski evacuate parliament?
3. Locate Macedonia on a world map. The CIA World Factbook refers to Macedonia as an "emerging democracy." Direct students to recall the histories of other democracies or democratic republics that they may have studied. Then ask: Do you think what is happening in Macedonia is representative of what one finds in an emerging democracy? ave students conduct research to learn more about the political system in Macedonia and the current situation in that country, and share their findings. Challenge each student to write an essay that supports or rejects the label of "emerging democracy" for Macedonia.
