Overview

What influences the evolution of entertainment and its impact on people? Varied cultural, social, and technological factors are at the core of historic and modern-day entertainment innovation. This story examines how MTV became-and remains-an industry icon by creatively combining pop culture, television, music, and marketing ingenuity.

Objectives

Students will be able to:

  • List and examine the social, technological, and cultural elements that drive entertainment innovation by reading the CNNfyi articleMTV: 20 Years of Entertainment Innovation"

  • Research and identify the factors that have contributed to the evolution of entertainment over the past 20 years to the present by creating a chart.

  • Predict the future of the entertainment innovation.

    Procedures

    1) Direct students to read the CNNfyi article "MTV: Rewinding 20 years of music revolution" and then respond to the following questions:

What is MTV? When did MTV start its work? What is MTV celebrating? Why is this celebration important? What does it mark in terms of the entertainment industry?

What has MTV done for television? How has MTV had an impact on popular culture? Which audience does MTV primarily serve? In what ways did it bring different groups of young people together? How do feel about television programs such as MTV guiding popular culture?

What impact did MTV have on the music business and artists? List some of the artists that benefited from MTV. What role did MTV play in programming for black video artists? Why do you think MTV promote this type of programming?

What risks did MTV take by merging music and video? How has it influenced the cable and mainstream television industries? How has MTV expanded its services and audience?

    2) Divide the students into four groups, each representing one of the following decades: 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s. Have each group research its decade's type of entertainment considering the following factors: · historic and/or other momentous events; · popular "pop" culture; · dominant technology; · economic trends.

    3) Each group should create a chart on poster board that reflects its findings. Students should hang their charts around the classroom.

    Assessment

Students should review all the charts to determine, for each decade, whether entertainment influenced the times or whether the times influenced entertainment. Groups engage in informal debates to discuss this notion, using their research findings to support their point of view.

    Accommodations

Students can create a poster advertising a new type of entertainment technology for the year 2005 or beyond that appeals to a certain age group.

    Challenge

As technological advances are made, the entertainment industry also evolves. Typically, these two entities go hand in hand. Conducting research on changing or emerging technologies, such as the DVD player and the palm pilot, or the use of digital animation, students can predict what entertainment may look like in the year 2005 and beyond.
