Overview: What is Islam? Investigate the basic principals of Islam and its position on violence. Use the article and discussion questions to have students compare Islam with Judaism and Christianity and discuss the similarities and differences among these religions.

Curriculum Connections: Religion, Current Events

After students read the CNNfyi.com story, "Islam: A religion of many faces, misconceptions, "ask the following questions:

1. Who is Yvonne Haddad? According to Haddad, how many people worldwide are Muslim? What religion do Muslims practice? What are some countries in which Islam has a presence? 2. What is the literal definition of the term "Islam"? Who was Mohammed? What is the Koran? What evidence suggests that there are some similarities between Islam and Christianity? What is "jihad"? Explain the differences between Sunni Muslims and Shiite Muslims. Why do you think Haddad compares the Muslim idea of self-sacrifice to the story of Samson in the Old Testament?

3. Encourage your students to investigate the basic principals of Islam and its position on violence. Point out that many nationalities and religions, including Islam, have been victimized by the horrific attacks that took place on September 11. Your students can read about one Muslim-American family that lost a loved one in one of these attacks by going to the last Web site below.

4. How does Islam compare to Christianity and Judaism? Ask students to create graphic organizers that compare the three religions, using current social studies texts, reference materials, and the links below. After graphic organizers are complete, have students discuss the similarities and differences among these religions. How might this information be used to reduce the stereotypes and stigma that are associated with Islam? Discuss.

Extension
Inform students that in early Islamic society, a set pattern was established for women. Discuss the role of women today in Muslim countries such as Egypt and Turkey. Use online and print resources to compare this role with that of women in countries such as Saudi Arabia and Iran.
