Curriculum Connections: International Relations
Have students read the CNNfyi.com article "Iran struggles to define international policy" ask the following questions:
1. Who is the leader of Iran? Why is Ayatollah Ali Khameini not interested in talking to the United States? What religion dominates Iran? Who was the Ayatollah Khomeini? What happened during his regime that brought an end to diplomatic relations between the U.S. and Iran?
2. Who is Mohammed Khatami? What political perspective does he represent? According to experts, why do even Iranian fundamentalists have a common interest with the U.S. in Afghanistan? What is the current relationship like between Iran and the U.S.?
3. Direct your students to the Internet and other resources to learn more about Iran, its government and its relations with the U.S. Have students share their information. Ask: What does each side have to gain from mutual cooperation? Are there any political downsides to cooperation between the U.S. and Iran? Discuss.
