WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Eighth-grader Sean Conley won the 2001 Scripps Howard
National Spelling Bee Thursday by spelling "succedaneum" (SUX-ah-DAY-nee-um) in
the 16th round.
Conley, 13, beat Kristin Hawkins, who incorrectly spelled "resipiscence"
(RES-sih-PIS-sance).
"I wanted to win," Conley told a reporter afterwards.
Conley, who finished second in last year's bee, is from Anoka, Minnesota.
Succedaneum is defined as "one that comes next, after, or replaces
another in an office position or role."
