Traficant sole incumbent in Ohio race

AKRON, Ohio (CNN) -- Convicted Congressman James Traficant will be the only incumbent in Ohio's 17th District race after a Democratic primary in which eight-term Rep. Tom Sawyer was ousted by Tim Ryan, a 28-year-old state senator with ties to Traficant.

Sawyer was hurt in the newly drawn, labor-friendly district by his voting record on trade issues. He supported the North American Free Trade Agreement and fast-track trade authority, both of which are strongly opposed by unions.

The primary was Tuesday.

Ryan will now face his mentor, Traficant, a former Democrat who is running as an independent, did not have to go through a party primary. Also on the ballot will be Republican Ann Womer-Benjamin and another independent, prominent labor leader Warren Davis.

Despite Traficant's seniority and high name recognition, Ryan is the solid favorite this fall.

Ohio's Republican-controlled legislature redrew House district lines in January to combine a small portion of Sawyer's Akron base with much of Traficant's Youngstown-area district.

Traficant faces up to 63 years in prison after he was convicted in March on 10 federal counts of bribery and racketeering. Sentencing is scheduled for June 27.
